The Rudder of the Day

How we start our day matters. Have you ever considered that what you do each morning is like a boat’s rudder that helps to steer the direction of your day? When I’m in what I like to call a “funk,” I can often trace it back to not making time for what matters most at the start of my day.

My best days are the days I start by giving thanks to God, which is even better with a cup of coffee. Just a few minutes of praying, reflecting, and reading the Bible or a short daily devotional in the morning helps to guide my rudder towards a great day. When I start to push that time aside and jump right into the day in my own strength and power, I can quickly find myself overwhelmed, bitter, frustrated, resentful, irritated, hopeless, fearful, etc.  What about you? What do you fill your first hour of the day with? Is there something you could do in that first hour to change course to steer the rudder toward a more incredible day.
